With USCG Captain Jon Bondy
The Detroit River, with its many islands, channels and drop offs provide anglers with quite a few options during the annual walleye run. Jon specializes in vertical jigging using light tackle to wrestle the fish up from the bottom. The typical technique is to drift down with the current along drops and edges while hopping or holding your jig just inches above the bottom. The strong flow of the river allows you to cover a large area in a short period of time and then focus in on the key spots. When fish are located, often in a distinct depth because of baitfish present, more drifts are made. It is a great feeling to be out as spring just makes its prescence known.

Jon will personally show you how to jig up these fish using light line, light jigs, light to medium action rods and proper boat control. Trips start as soon as the ice leaves, often in mid March, and goes into the first of June. There is no closed season, and in Ontario waters the limit is 6 fish per person with a valid license. Michigan has a lower limit, although Jon will go where the fish are. Early in the season, like mid March, it's just big egg and milt laden walleye. As the months progress into May, many other species migrate up the river and you could catch just about anything. And Jon will clean em!
